Tsingory Dance Biography
Tsingory Dance and Music of Madagascar celebrates
new and ongoing works in ethno-contemporary dance and music. We combine
disciplines and artistic trends under cultural studies and experiments. Our
dances present forms of art from our era, with works by in-house
choreographers, and our musical director and composer. Our goal is to present
strong, educational and entertaining works of art. Our artistic vision is to be
a vehicle for dialogue between cultures and generations. We welcome
cultural exchanges between us and the audience through performance,
discussions, workshops and instrument demonstrations.
Tsingory Dance and Music of Madagascar is a lively company based in Toronto and Montreal, Canada. We perform Malagasy dance with live accompaniment, using traditional instruments such as Marovany, Kabosy, Valiha, Sodina, Langoraona, and Amponga be. All of our costumes and headpieces are professionally custom made. Some include handmade embroidered elements from Madagascar. The dances are choreographed by Lanto and Jenni Morse. The dancers are all professional dancers who maintain their training, in ballet and modern, outside of the company. First created in May 2009 as Kintana Gasy, the company has been performing and teaching workshops for audiences of all ages. We offer workshops in English, French, and Malagasy.

Lanto Morse
Artistic Director
Lanto Morse has been dancing since early childhood. She extensively studied ballet and traditional Malagasy dance while growing up in Antananarivo, the capital city of Madagascar. She brings her incredible knowledge and expertise of the country and its culture to audiences across Canada.The other members of the group consider her to be the heart and soul of Tsingory Dance. As a skilled clothing designer and seamstress, Lanto creates the costumes for the group. Growing up with economic challenges she always found happiness in dance and music. Lanto was surrounded by the traditional entertainers in Madagascar during events such as body exhumations, weddings, baby’s first haircut, and circumcision. Initially dancing with the group, Lanto is now one of Tsingory Dance's musicians and still performs in all of their shows. Since its origins as Kintana Gasy, Lanto remains the primary choreographer for the company. |
Jenni Morse
Co-Director
Jennifer Morse is an established dancer, choreographer, and teacher with years of professional experience and training in Canada and the U.S. Jennifer has been training since the age of two and started her professional career at the age of 11, touring across Ontario with the Canadian Contemporary Dance Theatre (CCDT) for eight years. While performing with CCDT she has had the incredible opportunity to work with such choreographers as Sidra Bell (New York), Alexander Whitley (England), Colin Connor (California), Sylvie Bouchard (Quebec) and William Yong (Japan), among others. In the summer of 2012, Jennifer travelled to New York City as a scholarship student at the school of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre for their professional summer intensive. While in New York she also participated in a Merce Cunningham Repertory Workshop, performing in Inlets 2 and Fielding Sixes. Jennifer has worked with various ethnic dance companies in Montreal and Toronto, including Polynesian Dream and Pratihba Arts in Toronto, and Zab Maboungou/Compagnie Danse Nyata Nyata in Montreal. Jennifer is also a certified Zumba fitness instructor and actively teaches in Montreal and Toronto. In 2009, Tsingory Dance was founded. In 2011, Jennifer became the co-director of Tsingory Dance, an ethno-contemporary dance and music ensemble that performs works from the island of Madagascar. As the rehearsal director and co-choreographer for the company, Jennifer has accompanied the troupe on-stage in hundreds of festivals in Ontario, Quebec, and New York. Jennifer dances, sings, and plays percussion with the company. |
